Prevention of Homelessness in the RCMP Veterans’ Community
Many RCMP Veterans across Canada live in rental housing.
Renters across Canada faced record-low vacancy rates (1.5%) and record-high average rent growth (+8.0%) in 2023, according to the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation. They also spent a larger share of their income on shelter costs than homeowners, putting them under greater financial pressure when costs increase.
As the cost of living and housing rises, RCMP Veterans and their family members, especially those in rental accommodation, may find themselves at greater risk of homelessness than ever before. This over and above any other health, well-being or financial issues they may face day-to-day.
The RCMP Veterans’ Association is here to help. In partnership with Government of Canada, the Association has now launched the RCMP Veterans’ Homelessness Program.
Funded by a 4-year grant of $440,000 from Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada, this program will enable access to essential counseling and services for eligible RCMP Veterans. It will also provide critical financial assistance, including rent and cost supplements, as needed and as qualified.
Under the Program Coordinator, the RCMP Veterans’ Homelessness Program will leverage the Association’s Support and Advocacy network of volunteers across Canada. It will be seamlessly integrated in the Association’s existing suite of services, further bolstering our commitment to supporting RCMP Veterans and their families in need, regardless whether or not they are members of our Association.
In 2015, we grieved when RCMP Veteran Albert Pless froze to death when living in his vehicle after being evicted from his apartment in rural Manitoba. It can happen to one of us, or to someone we know.
For Albert Pless it was too late. All Association members – if you become aware of any RCMP Veteran or family member in your area who needs help, call or email your Division Support and Advocacy Member.
Any RCMP Veteran needing help, or anyone, anywhere, at any time who knows an RCMP Veteran or family member in need, can call the Association toll-free at 1 877 251 1771, or email at rcmpvethomelessness@rcmpva.org
