Chief Paul Martin of the Durham Regional Police Service took part in Chinese New Year celebrations at the Pickering Recreation Centre Saturday along with members of the community and the President of the Toronto Division of the RCMP Veterans’ Association, Jim Brown.
The event was co-hosted by The Chinese Heritage Society of Canada and the Indo-Canadian Cultural Association of Durham.
The evening of celebration welcomed the year of Monkey, a year that is considered to be fast- paced and energetic. The celebration showcased Chinese culture with several performers coming all the way from China to give Durham Region a true taste of the Chinese traditions.
The Chinese community lived in India for more than 500 years and the partnership recognizes that cultural connection. Events like these work to bring together Canadians who originated from different nations into one unified family. Members of several cultures attended to celebrate and share in the happiness of the New Year.
Chief Martin took part in the festivities and brought greetings to the attendees on behalf of DRPS. He wished everyone a happy and prosperous year of the Monkey.
