Décès de deux agents des services de police de Simcoe Sud

There is little doubt that the entire police community is feeling the loss of the two South Simcoe police officers who were shot and killed in the line of duty on October 11, 2022. The Association Board’s thoughts and prayers are with the South Simcoe Police Service and the family and friends of the two slain officers.

The following was written by a recently retired RCMP Member, Beth Stewart Leatherdale, in response to this tragedy. I do not believe any of us could have said it better. Beth has given the Association permission to use her words:

“This morning I am both angered and saddened by the news of two police officers killed in Ontario. It breaks my heart for their families and for their police brothers and sisters. They died because they responded to a call for help. How does that make sense?

In the past two days, members I worked with and care about were involved in two separate shootings here in our own community. (Edmonton area) Thankfully they are physically ok. But they will be changed forever.

There is so much criticism about police use of force. I’m not saying that it does not happen and in some cases the criticism is justified.

But please know that each time police respond to a violent call for service, they have seconds, if that to decide what type of response and force is required so they can protect those that need it. And, so, they can go home to their families at the end of the shift. Any hesitation or doubt in their decision can cost them their lives.

Many, if not most “clients” dealt with carry weapons. It is the way it is these days. Sad but true. So, during a shift it is very likely that members will be faced with that instant decision that will decide whether they make it home to their families. I wish I could say I am exaggerating, but it is the sobering truth.

It is not often I take to Facebook to vent my frustration about the constant criticism that police officers face. But I am saddened and angered that two police officers have lost their lives and right here in our backyard others were very close to losing theirs.

The media will portray the story that is most glorified and does not tell all of the facts. They were not there. Only those involved and faced with the tough decisions will know the facts. No one else. Please remember that the next time you read or listen to an article where the media present the “full story” and how the police are at fault…. again. There is always more to the story. Enough is enough. “

To all serving members who constantly go out to protect and serve, a heartfelt thank you. Times are difficult. Stay safe out there.

And to all Veterans, thank you for your service.
